History of Mas Cànovas

The origins of Mas Cànovas go back to the Roman times, as it has been confirmed by the numerous archeological rests found around the farm: old looms, pieces of terra sigilata and fragments of amphora. All of them make us think it was an agricultural farmhouse devoted to the production of wine and where their inhabitants had a high quality life.

The first written documents talking about the house date back to 1148. On 1215 the Lord of the farm was the knight Berenguer de Canovis.
In a further document from 1295, it is stated that Mr. Simó de Gironella sold to Mr. Guillem de Camós his fortress named Cànovas. The existence of a bread oven and a wine cellar is mentioned.

Mas Canovas

The importance and the independency of the farmhouse belonging to Mas Cànovas is shown by the fact that its owners only had to pay taxes to the ecclesiastical power and to the highest feudal power and not to minor feudal masters as it was usual at these times. This kind of houses were known as ‘aloera house’,

During the middle Ages there was only the building corresponding to the house, but after the Turkish corsair attacks in the first of August of 1545, an isolated tower was constructed beside the main house. It was meant to be a watching point, protective and isolated. In case of attack, the tower would become an inaccessible place by retiring the wood parcels that separated it from the main house.

A century later, a chapel was built in order to link both buildings. Main house, tower and chapel are the three buildings we find nowadays. The homestead has been inherited from fathers to sons ever since. The last owner who bore the name of the house was Mrs. Marianna de Cànovas, who lived during the XVIIth century. Afterwards it has been a property of the families Prat de Sant Julià, Casanova and Vives.
